How to choose the right sunscreen .

Summers are going to start . Sun will be at its extreme . Its the time when our skin suffers the most.  We get acne , black heads , tanned skin and much more . So we must protect ourselves from the UV rays of sun which is extremely harmful for everyone.
So ,I am here with the topic - ''HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUNSCREEN ''.
How to Choose the Right Sunscreen – Sun protection is needed throughout the year, but it becomes all the more important during summer. And choosing the right sunscreen is not an easy job. We usually try to pick our sunscreen based on our skin type. But there are various other factors associated with sunscreen, such as SPF, PA, different textures of sunscreen, type of your outdoor exposure etc. Many at times, we get confused by the large variety of sunscreens available in the market and end up getting a wrong one for us. We want to make sure that you do not repeat the same mistake again, and that’s why, here we have come up with a detailed post on How to Choose the Right Sunscreen.

WHICH IS THE RIGHT SUNSCREEN-

1.SKIN TYPE -

  • OILY SKIN          -  Use water based or gel based sunscreen with a matte finish. You can also opt for spray sunblocks or powder sunscreens.sunscreen

  • DRY SKIN          -  Use water resistant sunscreen and apply mosturizer before using it.
  • NORMAL SKIN  -  Use water resistant sunscreen. Thus helpful in case of sweating or swimming.

  • SENSITIVE SKIN - Must have Zinc Oxide & Titanium Oxide.

2.INGREDIENTS - Before buying a sunscreen , see its ingredients first

  • Sunscreen must be PABA [ Para Amino Benzoic Acid] free.
  • It must be Oxybenzone free
  • Oxybenzone
    Oxybenzone

  • Must be Alcohol free but if your skin is prone to acne then buy sunscreen having alcohol in it.

3.BROAD SPECTRUM - Sunscreen must be a broad spectrum sunscreen because it will give protection against both UV-A & UV-B rays.

4.EXPIRY DATE -   Check expiry date before buying.

5.SPF    -
This is the first thing that we need to consider while choosing the right sunscreen. SPF is normally indicated on the label of the sunscreen along with PA. So, lets quickly check out what do these mean?

There are two types of UV radiation – UVA and UVB. UVA is long wavelength UV rays that usually penetrate deeper into the skin and results in premature aging. skin cancer and extreme dryness of the skin. UVB is short wavelength UV rays that mainly affect the skin surface and cause sun burn and sun tan.

The PA of a sunscreen indicates the protection against UVA and SPF indicates the protection against UVB. Always choose a broad spectrum sunscreen which means the particular formula has SPF and PA and offers protection against both UVA and UVB.

The higher the SPF (SPF 30 or more) and PA (PA +++) value the better protection it offers against the sun damage.

  •   If you are not exposed to sun much then start from SPF 15 .
  •   If you are exposed to sunlight the start with SPF 30.

According to American Academy of Dermatology [ AAD] -

POINTS YOU MUST KNOW -

  1.  Sunscreen can works maximum upto 2 hours so you have to apply it again after 2 hours.
  2. Apply it minimum 10-15 mins before going outside in exposure to sun.
  3. Firstly apply it lightly on your face and then dab it on face . In this way it will not be absorbed into the pores of the face and the chance of acne will reduce.
  4. You must also carry an umbrella, hat , sunglasses with you and should also cover your face with a cotton stall .
  5. The sunlight between 10AM - 2 PM is extremely harmful . So avoid sunlight at that time.
Thus , in this way you can protect your face from UV rays of sun.
